The Genetics Behind the Predictions

Each trait in this calculator is anchored to a single variant with a strong, replicated effect: HERC2 rs12913832 for blue-versus-brown eyes, ABCC11 rs17822931 for earwax, TAS2R38 rs713598 for bitter tasting, MCM6 rs4988235 for lactose tolerance, ALDH2 rs671 for alcohol flush, OR6A2 rs72921001 for cilantro perception, and MC1R rs1805007 for red hair.

Because each parent contributes one copy of each variant at random, the four Punnett-square combinations give exact genotype odds. The only modeling step is translating genotype to trait, which is where published penetrance data comes in. Simple traits map cleanly; eye color is shown with its known polygenic caveat.

How does the baby trait calculator work?

Each trait is driven mainly by one well-studied genetic variant. Every parent passes one of their two copies to the child at random. That's the Punnett square you learned in school. We enumerate all four combinations for each trait and convert the genotype odds into trait probabilities using published association data.

How accurate are the predictions?

For simple dominant/recessive traits like earwax type, lactose tolerance and alcohol flush, the model is quite reliable. Eye color is mostly but not entirely explained by the HERC2 variant we use; greens and hazels involve other genes, so treat those odds as approximations. Traits like hair curl or height are far too polygenic for this approach, which is why we don't pretend to predict them.

Do I need to upload both parents' DNA files?

No. You can simply pick each parent's genotype from the dropdowns (your GenomeInsight report shows them for every trait). Uploading the raw files just fills them in automatically. Files are analyzed locally in your browser and never uploaded anywhere.

Can this predict my baby's health or medical risks?

No, and it isn't meant to. This tool covers harmless physical and sensory traits. Carrier screening for serious inherited conditions is a different analysis that deserves clinical-grade testing and genetic counseling.
