What Your Haplogroup Tells You
Haplogroups are the oldest layer of ancestry, reaching back tens of thousands of years before surnames, borders, or written records. Your maternal haplogroup follows the mitochondrial line back toward one of the great migrations out of Africa; your paternal haplogroup does the same along the Y-chromosome line. A result like R1b ties a paternal line to Bronze-Age Western Europe; L2 ties a maternal line to West Africa; Q-M3 marks one of the founding paternal lineages of the Americas.
Remember that these are just two threads in a huge ancestral tapestry. You inherit DNA from thousands of ancestors, and haplogroups trace only the two unbroken mother-line and father-line threads.

What is a haplogroup?
A haplogroup is a branch of the human family tree defined by shared ancestral mutations. Your maternal haplogroup traces your mother's mother's line through mitochondrial DNA; your paternal haplogroup (if you have a Y chromosome) traces your father's father's line. Together they describe the deep-ancestry journeys of two of your many ancestral lines.
Can consumer DNA chips really determine haplogroups?
Partially. 23andMe and AncestryDNA chips include hundreds of mitochondrial and Y-chromosome markers, enough to assign major clades like H, J, R1b or E1b1a. They cannot resolve the fine terminal branches that a dedicated mtDNA test, Y-STR panel or Big Y sequencing would give. We show you the broad clade your data supports, plus the exact marker evidence, so nothing is overstated.
Why don't I see a paternal haplogroup?
Paternal haplogroups come from the Y chromosome, which only males carry. If your raw data has no Y-chromosome markers, no paternal result appears. Women can learn their paternal line by testing a father, brother, or paternal uncle, since the line is shared.
Is my DNA file uploaded anywhere?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your raw file never leaves your device. You can verify this in your browser's Network tab. Nothing is stored, transmitted, or shared.
My result says 'broad' clade. What does that mean?
It means your file matched a marker for a major branch (for example macro-haplogroup N or R) but none of the more specific markers in our panel. That is normal for chip data. Services like full-mtDNA sequencing or Y-700 tests resolve much deeper branches.
